Renowned as one of the Gold Coast’s most talented and versatile pianists, Graham Lockwood is bringing his acclaimed ensemble, Jazz Intersection, to the Gold Coast City Jazz Club on Tuesday, 3 February 2026.
Known for his mastery of keyboards, Hammond organ, and Fender Rhodes, as well as his rich vocal performances, Graham has been a fixture in the jazz scene for decades—and his upcoming show promises a night of exceptional musicianship and timeless jazz.
We caught up with Graham to chat about his musical journey and what audiences can expect in February.
Can you tell us a little about your history in music?
Although I took piano lessons at the age of 9 for a few years, my first instrument was guitar during the ’60s. Then, during the early ’70s, I took to Hammond Organ after listening to Jimmy Smith and played both guitar and organ. I then progressed to synthesizers and Fender Rhodes electric piano from the late ’70s onwards. This constant affair with keyboards and guitars is what has managed to keep me in poverty for so long—not to mention a bad back. I also studied classical guitar for about six years.
What has been the highlight of your career as a musician?
I’ve always loved big band music and played in many of them in the UK. I was lucky enough to play piano with drummer Warren Daly’s big band—after his split with Ed Wilson in the early ’80s—in Sydney after emigrating there in 1980.
Who are your musical influences?
My main influences are Jimmy Smith on the Hammond organ and Charlie Parker on alto sax. I bought a couple of 33s (rpm!) at the local marketplace when I had just started tertiary education at art college, and they blew me away.
What can people expect at your concert?
A cross-section of more modern repertoire. Male singers like Al Jarreau and Michael Franks; female singers Patti Austin, Randy Crawford, and Sade; instrumentalists David Sanborn, Dave Grusin, Jeff Lorber, and Bob James—together with some classic standards.
What is your favourite song to perform?
“Since I Fell for You” performed by Al Jarreau on the 1986 album ‘Double Vision‘.
What advice do you have for a rookie player?
Always find better players to perform with—I’m still doing it!
