If you’ve ever wondered what the future of big band jazz looks like on the Gold Coast, you won’t have to look far. It’s already here- and it’s sounding incredible
Project Swing has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most exciting big bands around, known for its youthful energy, high standards and unmistakable passion for jazz. But more than just a band, Project Swing has become something much bigger- a thriving musical community built on opportunity, connection and a shared love of swing.
At the heart of it all is a simple but powerful idea. Local musician and educator Andrew Montfroy recognised a gap that many young players face- after years of learning and performing at school, opportunities to continue playing big band jazz can suddenly disappear. Drawing on his own lifelong love of the genre and experience performing with top ensembles, he set out to create something that would keep that momentum alive. What began as reconnecting former students has grown into a vibrant, ever-evolving platform for the next generation of jazz musicians.
What makes Project Swing so special is the environment it creates. It’s a place where emerging musicians can challenge themselves, collaborate and perform at a high level while also forming genuine friendships along the way. Weekly rehearsals have turned into regular gigs and the band’s reputation continues to grow with every performance.
And now, that momentum has given rise to something new.
Enter Take 2 Big Band.
Don’t let the name fool you- there’s nothing second-rate about this group. Take 2 represents the next wave of exceptional young musicians coming through the ranks. Formed about a year ago and made up largely of senior high school players, the band is already turning heads with its tight ensemble work, impressive musicality, and infectious enthusiasm.
Performing a mix of classic big band charts and fresh contemporary arrangements, Take 2 Big Band delivers a sound that is both polished and full of life. The only thing separating them from their Project Swing counterparts is a few years of experience and even that gap is closing fast.
Together, these ensembles represent a clear and exciting pathway for young jazz musicians on the Gold Coast. Through ongoing recruitment and strong connections with local schools, Project Swing continues to bring through new talent, linking the next generation with those just a few steps ahead of them.
Looking ahead, the vision continues to grow. With plans to expand and create even more opportunities for young players through a third band, the long-term goal is to build something truly lasting- an initiative that connects musicians with mentors, educators and performance pathways at every stage of their journey.
Supported by a passionate local jazz community including backing from the Gold Coast City Jazz Club, Project Swing and Take 2 are helping shape something special.
And it’s only just getting started.
Take 2 Big Band will be lighting up the stage at the Gold Coast City Jazz Club at Southport Bowls Club on Tuesday 19 May 2026 from 7pm. If you’re a fan of big band jazz or just love live music, this is your chance to experience the next generation in full flight.
